FACTS OF INTEREST:

  • There are two species of wild turkey, the common turkey of North America and the ocellated turkey of Central and South America.
  • The turkey is a large bird in the genus Meleagris, which is native to the Americas. One species, Meleagris gallopavo (commonly known as the wild turkey or domestic turkey), is native to the forests of North America, mainly Mexico and the United States.
  • Both sexes of the ocellated turkeys have bluish-gray tails with a well-defined, eye-shaped, blue-bronze colored spot near the end followed by bright gold tip. These spots give the ocellated turkey its name, as the Latin word for eye is oculus.
